Dear colleagues, it remains for us to discuss the last task of the OGE exam - a personal letter. It prepares us for an almost similar writing assignment for the USE.

general information

IN last section the written part of the exam, the student must answer the letter that he received from a friend, it is advisable to do this for 30 minutes, and the maximum for a correctly written letter can be grabbed 10 points.

The task is not difficult. If you write a letter a week during the school year, by the end of the 9th grade, it will not be difficult for the average student to write a personal letter for 8-9 points, because this task, like speaking, requires practice and practicing clichés.

How to write a letter

I offer students the following scheme for writing a personal letter:

Actually, it remains only to learn this form and answer ALL three questions asked in the letter. And also do not forget that you need to use abbreviations in the letter and keep within 100-120 words.

By the way, about word count criteria. All words are counted, from the first word to the last, including auxiliary verbs, prepositions, articles, particles. In a personal letter, the address, date (the date in the format 20/08/2017 counts as one word), and the signature are also counted. Wherein:

 contracted (short) forms can’t, didn’t, isn’t, I’m, etc. are counted as one word;

 numerals, expressed in numbers, i.e. 1, 25, 2009, 126 204 etc. count as one word;

- numerals, expressed in numbers, together with symbol percent, i.e. 25%, 100%, etc. are counted as one word;

 numerals expressed in words are considered as words;

 compound words such as good-looking, well-bred, English-speaking, twenty-five are counted as one word;

 abbreviations, for example USA, e-mail, TV, CD-rom, are considered as one word;

- words spelled incorrectly, for example, without the hyphen well bread, will be counted as 2 words, and written by wellbread as one (i.e., the count is based on the fact of writing).

What about vocabulary and grammar? The letter must be well-formed and contain thematic words. You can show a detailed knowledge of grammar by doing it all year and honing it in the process of writing letters.

I can say the same about vocabulary. Learn, use in conversation and writing so that the student can use it in the exam.

And the last piece of advice: if you are not sure about the spelling of a word or a grammatical structure - do not write, it is better to write simply, but correctly.

In Russia we have a different number of exams each year. In my grade we have two. The obligatory one is mathematics (oh, I should prepare so hard to pass it successfully) and the other each student can choose by himself. I have chosen English because I have a pretty strong sense of language and I prefer oral exams, because I hate tests. Plus, the regular practice with you, as an English-speaking pen friend helps me a lot. Thanks! As a preparation for my exams I usually read and reread all the past material in my notebook and try to remember it. And it works!

A comment: In accordance with the task, the letter should contain 100-120 words. IN this letter- 129 words, i.e. the required length is met. Let's evaluate the letter according to four criteria.

Solution of the communicative problem (K1).

The letter lacks only a mention of future contacts, which is a shortcoming. All other requirements are fully met, so the letter can be evaluated at 3 points.

Organization of the text (K2).

All requirements for the structure of the letter are met, so the letter can be evaluated at 2 points.

Lexico-grammatical design of the text (K3).

There is one error that does not make it difficult to understand the text, while there are no language errors that make it difficult to understand the text. Vocabulary, grammatical structures used correspond to the set communicative task - writing can be assessed in 3 points.

Spelling and punctuation (K4).

The total number of spelling and punctuation errors that do not make it difficult to understand the text is 1, therefore, the letter can be evaluated at 2 points.
